The Alderson Broaddus men’s soccer team limited Seton Hill to just five shots while pitching a 2-0 shutout Tuesday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium.
This was the Battlers second clean sheet of the season and it came on the heels of allowing three goals at Ohio Valley.
“With the defensive performance from the OVU game still fresh, we decided to revisit some simple defensive principles that seemed to have gone on a hiatus,” head coach Scott Phipps said. “Coach Fridal has done an outstanding job in a short time by getting this young group to begin grasping a difficult defensive scheme.”
Midway through the first half Nathaniel Kast sent a long diagonal pass into the offensive end. Marco Profumo chested the ball down and volleyed it past the keeper to put the Battlers up 1-0.
Nick Foster added an insurance goal in the 42nd minute. Brian Taylor forced a rushed play between the Griffin keeper and defense. The ball bounced off several Seton Hill players before Foster found the ball and put it to the back of the net.
“I feel that the confidence is definitely rising. The key is to stay focused and level headed. With a young team it is easy to get ahead of yourselves,” said Phipps. “I still attribute the tough stretch of non-conference games to start the season as a key to the team beginning to gel and believe that they are capable of competing at a high level.”
Ricard Lao made a pair of saves to pick up his second shutout and third win on the season.
The Battlers are back in action on Saturday when they host James Pucci and Davis & Elkins at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m..
