Coates was selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 WNBA draft by the Chicago Sky. She missed the entire season due to an ankle injury and was re-signed to the Sky for 2018. The six-foot-four center appeared in 32 games that season averaging 3.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in 11.4 minutes per game.
Prior to the start of the 2019 season, Coates was picked up by the Atlanta Dream where she appeared in 23 games averaging 2.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 7.3 minutes per game.
Coates brings in interior presence the Dream could use as they look to retool their roster from last year. The South Carolina native has yet to truly hit her stride in her young two-year WNBA career. She showed a great deal of promise with the Sky at times going head-to-head with some of the leagues top centers.
The Dream have retooled their roster quite a bit during the offseason with the addition of Courtney Williams, Glory Johnson, Kalani Brown and Shekinna Sticklen. Headed into the WNBA draft, Atlanta is expected to select Texas A&M guard Chennedy Carter in many mock drafts as the franchise could use additional scoring options at the guard spot.
