The D2 Men's Basketball season is just a few weeks from initial tip-off, and it is time to start previewing what to expect in the coming months before we crown a champion in late March.
To start off our prognostications, we head to the Atlantic Region where defending champion Fairmont State looks to make it back to the National Title Game and avenge their loss to NW Missouri State.
But as one of the most powerful regions in the nation, there are plenty of contenders awaiting their shot to take down the Falcons, giving the Atlantic Region some of the most exciting potential of any region in 2017-18.
Who takes it all? What players are ones to watch? Find out below and check back for more regional previews for both men's and women's basketball only at HERO Sports.
D2 Women's Basketball: Atlantic Regional Preview
Defending Regional Champion
2016-17 Record: 34-3 (21-1, MEC)
Conference Tournament: L MEC Title Game to West Liberty
NCAA Tournament: L National Title Game to NW Missouri State
Returning Starters: 3
Fairmont State should be a great team yet again in 2017, but a lot of questions surround the national runners-up in their quest to take the final step to glory. Chief among them is the replacement of now Youngstown State coach Jerrod Calhoun with Joe Mazzulla, a former WVU standout and NBA D-League coach.
Three starters return, led by junior guard Jason Jolly who should really step into his own as a floor general this season. Picked second in the Mountain East, the conference schedule will be grueling, but the tell-tale sign if FSU is still a national contender.
A playoff spot should be well in hand, but if the Falcons will get back to Sioux Falls, they have to answer some questions about the team quickly before facing some of the juggernauts in the Atlantic and elsewhere.
