After losing away against Athletic Bilbao, FC Barcelona got their first three points of the season after winning 5-2 against Real Betis. Antoine Griezmann was the first Catalan player to score twice at his Camp Nou debut, but the performance showed by Betis should not be forgotten.
Betis Scores the Opener But Fails to Secure the Result
Nabil Fekir, the most important signing of Real Betis during the summer, showed his class in the 15th minute, after beating Ter Stegen to take his team to the lead. A year ago, “Los Verdiblancos” secured an unexpected 3-4 victory against the Catalans, but unfortunately for them, the scenario did not repeat this season.
Despite a weak start of the match, Barcelona gradually returned to the lead of the game, with Griezmann leveling the playfield in the 41st minute. He made the double right after the start of the second half, while the young Perez Sayol, Jordi Alba, and Arturo Vidal increased the advantage. Loren managed to score a second goal for his team, but the match ended 5-2 for Barcelona, and Real Betis still waits for the first points in the new season.
It was a crowded summer for the Seville team. The Espanyol coach Rubi had joined the team, while Nabil Fekir, Alfonso Pedraza, and Iglesias Borja had been brought to fill the gaps left by several departures. Real Betis had also announced the signing of a new sponsorship contract with the online broker easyMarkets and aims to end up the new season higher in the rankings.
Although the team still did not win any points, the next four matches should represent an opportunity for Real Betis to compensate for the first two losses. The team will face Leganes, Getafe, and Levante at home, and Osasuna away.
Barcelona, on the other hand, will need to face Valencia and Villareal at home, with Osasuna and Granada expected to have little chances against the Catalans, despite playing in front of their fans.
The new La Liga season is back and we already had a few surprises. Even though Barcelona and Real Madrid started as clear favorites, both teams lost points unexpectedly. Still, the other teams will need to remain consistent, which wasn’t possible during the past few seasons. Things should get more exciting once Lionel Messi and Eden Hazard return from injury, two of the players which are expected to break records again.
