Billy Kennedy is out at Texas A&M.
"Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Kennedy will not be back for a ninth season, a person with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday," the Houston Chronicle reported on Tuesday.
Entering the SEC Tournament, Kennedy is 150-115 in eight years as head coach. He has two Sweet Sixteen appearances (2016 and 2018) but missed the tournament in each of the other six years.
The Chronicle also reported that A&M's top target is Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams, a Texas native who played at Texas A&M-Kingsville and was an Aggies' assistant under Billy Gillespie from 2004-06.
If Williams doesn't leave Virginia Tech, who might Texas A&M target?
Brad Underwood won big at Stephen F. Austin (89-14 in three seasons) before leaving for his "dream job" at Oklahoma State in 2016. He left a year later for his "dream job" at Illinois. The jumps are concerning, though his record is not (particularly an impressive turnaround this season), nor is nearly a decade of high-major experience.
Keep an eye on T.J. Otzelberger. His South Dakota State team was shocked in the Summit League quarterfinals, but he's coached under some highly respected coaches (Fred Hoiberg, Steve Prohm, Greg McDermott) and worked with current Aggies' athletics director Scott Woodward at Washington.
Do they have the money for Gregg Marshall? The Aggies' donor base has some deep pockets, but deep enough to sniff at least $4 million? Maybe. (Marshall currently makes $3.5 million per season.)
Other potential mid-major options: Mike Rhoades (VCU), Eric Musselman (Nevada), Matt McMahon (Murray State), Nate Oats (Buffalo) and Earl Grant (Charleston).
