Each week of the college basketball season the unexpected occurs. Here are this week's top upsets.
The Tar Heels had a great week. First, they knocked off Wake Forest 93-87, then upset a red-hot Florida St. squad at home, 96-83. The win snapped Florida State’s school-record win streak of 12-straight victories, and gave North Carolina its first big win of the season.
Previously, the Tar Heels had faced Kentucky and lost, then needed OT to knock of Clemson back on Jan. 3. Against Florida State, the Tar Heels took a 50-41 halftime lead and never looked back, eventually pulling away by double digits late in the second half. Joel Berry led all with a game-high 26 points, while Isaiah Hicks and Justin Jackson contributed 22 apiece.
The Nittany Lions entered Saturday’s contest against Minnesota having gone 2-2 in their last four games and without a victory over a ranked opponent. Turns out, Minnesota was in the giving mood.
After leading all game, the No. 25 ranked Gophers crumbled with nine minutes remaining in the contest and allowed Penn State to outscore them 30-18 in the second half.
Nate Mason hit a jumper at the 1:40 mark to put Minnesota back on top 50-48, but back-to-back trips to the free throw line, along with missed shots by Amir Coffey, and Mason, gave the Lions the narrow victory.
The win gave the Lions their first win over a nationally ranked opponent this season, and, perhaps, might usher in a strong finish.
The loss was the second of the week for the Gophers, who also fell to Michigan State on Wednesday.
