The Connecticut Sun made a pair of roster moves amidst the non-guaranteed contract deadline near the halfway point of the regular season. Basically, any player on a non-guaranteed contract would become guaranteed starting August 18th.
12-year WNBA vet Essence Carson was signed to the Sun via waiver claim. Second year WNBA guard Jacki Gemelos was waived as the team announced this week. Carson had been let go by the Washington Mystics less than a week ago after appearing in 10 games and averaging 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game.
Carson was drafted as the No.7 overall pick in the WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty in 2008. The six-foot guard spent the first eight years of her pro career with the Liberty and was named an All-Star in 2011. She was signed by the Los Angeles Sparks in free agency in 2016 and won a WNBA championship that same season. Carson was signed by the Phoenix Mercury in 2019 but battled on ongoing calf injury for a large portion of the season. She signed with the Mystics prior to this 2020 season.
The Connecticut Sun struggled in the early part of the season after an 0-5 start. The bulk of the Sun scoring fell on the shoulders of DeWanna Bonner making them fairly one dimensional early on and struggling to find additional scoring. They have now won four of their last six contests and currently sit at 4-7. We’ve seen a more balanced attack across the board with the Sun starting force and experienced players. Carson adds an element of experience and depth this Sun roster lacked.
Gemelos appeared in six games for Connecticut and averaged 1.8 points in 4.8 minutes per game.
Connecticut takes on the Indiana Fever on Tuesday, August 18 at 7:00pm ET.
