Just a day after news broke of Jonquel Jones' decision to sit out the 2020 season, the Connecticut Sun announced the addition of Beatrice Mompermier to the team.
Jones announced that she will not play this 2020 WNBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainties surrounding the situation.
"After careful thought and consideration I have decided to forego the upcoming WNBA season and use this time to focus on personal, social and familial growth," said Jones per release. "This was one of the toughest decisions I have made but the resurgence and unknown aspects of COVID-19 have raised serious health concerns that I do not feel comfortable competing in."
"We are excited to add Beatrice to our Sun roster," said Sun head coach Curt Miller per release. "She is a young and talented post player with a high ceiling. Beatrice is a proven collegiate rebounder and crafty scorer who will have the ability to contribute during her rookie season."
The six-foot-four forward was originally drafted out of the University of Miami as the No. 20th overall pick in this year's draft by the Los Angeles Sparks but was waived nearly a month ago.
It is hard to replace a Jonquel Jones, in fact, you can't replace her. But Mompremier brings a level of athleticism and size suitable for the league. As a walking double-double in college, she had the eye of WNBA scouts for years in the making. She'll be able to add a level of rim protection and versatility defensively to go along with her ability to rebound and score around the rim.
It is unknown at this time if additional players plan to sit out from the Sun. Players have until the 25th to let the league know of their decision to play this season or not.
