Zac Lawrence is playing a big part in the success of Fort Lewis this season. He has scored four goals and dished out five assists, ranking second on the team in points, and he credits a lot of his success to being tougher from a mental standpoint.
“I believe as a player I have improved the most on my mental side of the game,” Lawrence said. “As an athlete, you will have good days and you will have bad days. It is on the bad days that I work my hardest in practice and in games to do what I have to do for my team. Keeping my head in the game, whether I am having a good day or a bad day has been my key to success at the college level.”
Lawrence has certainly pushed himself to be at his best and has helped the Skyhawks put together a 10-3-1 record through their first 14 games, sitting one win shy of their win total from all of last season. Fort Lewis is 5-1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Lawrence said he is pleased with what he has been able to do to help the Skyhawks thrive and believes team has thrived off its refusal to quit no matter what challenges are in front of it.
“Up to this point in the season, I have felt good with the way I have been playing,” Lawrence said. “I have found that working hard on and off the soccer pitch definitely has its benefits. I believe the key to the team’s success has been the will to do what it takes to win. On and off the field, the team is my family and we fight for each other through every obstacle we face.”
Every player also understands his role.
“Every individual has their own role within the team and without one of the individual roles, we would not be having the success we are having in our season this year.”
Lawrence said he wants to be the best leader he can be going forward and stay focused every time he takes the field.
“Some personal expectations for the year ahead are to continue doing the best I can for the team in our future games and have fun every minute I am on the field playing for Fort Lewis College,” Lawrence said. “As a team, I expect us to continue towards our goals for the season and come to every game willing to do whatever it takes to win.”
