D2 Men’s Soccer: Spotlight on the CCAA Tournament

Cal State Stanislaus and and Cal State LA are both moving on in the CCAA tournament after posting wins in the quarterfinal round Tuesday.

Stanislaus earned a 3-1 win over Sonoma State and LA topped UC San Diego 3-1. Read more about the CCAA tournament below.

Jose Ramirez had a sensational night for Stanislaus in the CCAA tourney opener, scoring all three of the Warriors’ goals. Ramirez pushed his career goal total to 23. He is also the career leader in points with 53.

The Warriors have won five of their last six games and are 15-3-1 on the year. They have scored at least two goals in all but four games this season and have put up 53 goals in all. Ramirez has scored 11 of those goals, one shy of his total from the first three seasons combined. Daniel Kuczynski has also come up with 11 goals as well.

Stanislaus will now play Cal State Dominguez Hills in the semifinal round. The Warriors will go into the showdown with confidence as they defeated the Toros on Saturday with a 2-0 victory.

The Golden Eagles could not have picked a better time for revenge against the Tritons, knocking San Diego out of the CCAA tournament with a 3-1 win. Cal State LA had lost the regular season meeting by a 1-0 score.

Three players scored for the Golden Eagles as Samuel Kersh, Eduardo Almaraz and Kaan Gultoprak all scored goals. The Golden Eagles are 12-3-2 on the year and will play Cal Poly Pomona in the semifinal round of the tourney.

The win highlights the balance the Golden Eagles have as only Gultoprak is among the top five scorers on the team. He now has three goals and five assists. Almaraz scored only his second goal of the year and Kersh came through with his first of the season. The Eagles head into the semifinal round riding a three-game win streak and will look to avenge one of their other losses from the regular season as Cal Poly Pomona knocked off LA 1-0 back in September.
