D3 Men’s Soccer: Redlands Rides Second-Half Dominance in 2-1 Victory over Caltech Beavers

The University of Redlands men’s soccer team continued Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday afternoon by squaring off against the Caltech Beavers in sunny Pasadena. While trailing by a goal at the start of the second half, the Bulldogs responded with two scores in the final 45 minutes to take home a 2-1 victory.

The Bulldogs applied plenty of offensive pressure during the first half, tallying 10 shots on-goal with three coming from sophomore forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR). Boone was backed by two shots from sophomore midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR).

During the second half, sophomore midfielder Cody Dunham (Fountain Hills, CA) fired in the equalizer far post in the 60th minute, with help from sophomore defender Keoni Yates (Kailua-Kona, HI), who dished a low cross to assist on the game-tying score.

The Maroon and Gray proved to be efficient in their offensive opportunities in the second stanza, as sophomore defender Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA) put the Bulldogs in front by knocking in a header off of a free kick from senior defender Peter Marsden (Woodside, CA).

Sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Ochoa (Santa Monica, CA) kept the Beavers off the board in the second period by notching two saves to preserve the win.

The Bulldogs fired off 25 shots on the day, with Boone and ChubbFertal each hammering off five shots. Junior forward Matt Speegle (Castro Valley, CA) and Yates tried their foot three times apiece.

Ochoa (4-2) earned the victory after notching two saves in just over 51 minutes of action.

In addition, the Bulldogs dominated the corner-kick battle with a 12-2 advantage.

The Bulldogs (4-2-0, 2-2-0 SCIAC) head to the University of La Verne on Wednesday, September 23, for a 7 p.m. SCIAC bout with the Leopards.
