Amherst Features a Suffocating Defense
The Purple & White have rode their defense all season long. Amherst is allowing only .20 goals a game, which leads NCAA Division III, along with fellow Final Four participant Calvin. The Purple & White have outscored their opponents 43-4 in their 19 games.
Leading the way for the Amherst defense is senior goalkeeper Thomas Bull, who has started all 19 games and thrown an amazing 15 shutouts. Bull, who was named First Team All-NESCAC in 2013, and to the all-conference second team in 2014, picked up his second first team this year. Bull has collected an NCAA-record 49 career shutouts.
Another defensive stalwart for the Purple & White has been Justin Aoyama. A lockdown defender on one of the nation’s stingiest defenses, Aoyama has played a pivotal role in the Purple & White’s 15 shutouts thus far. In addition to helping Amherst surrender just four goals all season, Aoyama has been effective in the team’s midfield transition, and has provided three assists.
