BR-75 Buffalo State‘s Gabrianna Boldinski was named the SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Bengals secure the SUNYAC regular season championship. Boldinski led a Bengals’ defense that posted a pair of shutouts, moving their record to 12-0-1, along with a 13 game unbeaten streak. Buffalo State registered its ninth shutout of the season, just one shy of the school’s single-season record.
The senior anchored the Buffalo State defense that allowed just one shot in a 0-0 tie against BR-191 New Paltz State on Friday, and then allowed just six shots with only one on goal in a 1-0 win over BR-48 Oneonta State on Saturday. Boldinski also scored the game’s only goal on a header off a long throw-in at the 67 minute mark.
Buffalo State had its school-record 11-game winning streak snapped, but remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with the scoreless draw at New Paltz State.
Buffalo State dominated play from start to finish, outshooting the Hawks, 24-1, but could not break through. The Bengals only surrendered a single shot from 40 yards out that was easily handled by goalkeeper Jessica McCarey. The Bengals had 12 shots in the second half and six more in 20 minutes of overtime.
In the Bengal’s second shutout of the week, Melissa Smith scored both Buffalo State goals powering the Bengals past BR-52 Plattsburgh State 2-1 to remain undefeated in conference play. The Bengals final regular season home game on Saturday afternoon was also recognized as Senior Day.
Smith scored her first goal of the game in the 18th minute with an assist from Meghan Allen. Later in the half, Smith drilled a 20-yard free kick that tipped off Plattsburgh goalkeeper Nichole Gibson’s finger and under the crossbar, to give the Bengals a 2-0 lead.
About a minute later, Plattsburgh cut the lead to one when Bengal goalkeeper Jessica McCarey came out to challenge Cardinal forward Sarah Haight, but couldn’t keep the ball from getting past her as her shot ricocheted off the post and rolled to the back of the net. The second half saw both teams with opportunities to score, but none successful.
Buffalo State will close out the regular season with a non-conference game at BR-224 St. John Fisher, originally scheduled for Wednesday, but postponed to Thursday due to inclement weather. The Bengals will receive a first-round playoff bye in the SUNYAC playoffs and will host a semifinal matchup on Wednesday. against the winner of No. 4 Plattsburgh State/No. 5 Brockport State.
