"We have a shared mission with FanDuel to make sports more exciting," said Liberty Chief Operating Officer Keia Clarke. "Teaming up with a leading gaming operating in the US allows us to reach new and existing fans who want to experience the very best of New York basketball both digitally and at live events."
The FanDuel logo will now be placed on Liberty home and away jerseys and fan apparel, a trend the league has become accustomed to in the last ten years. The New York city based fantasy sport provider was the first gaming franchise to offer WNBA fantasy sport which began in 2017. The WNBA is also the company's first partnership with a professional women's sports league.
"We have been partners with the WNBA for several years and are incredibly proud to partner with the New York Liberty," said FanDuel Group Chief Executive Officer Matt King per release. "New York is an iconic sports town and home of FanDuel headquarters, so teaming up with the Liberty is an honor and natural fit. Together we will continue to bring New York fans and WNBA fans alike new and innovative ways to engage with the Liberty and its players."
Part of the appeal for FanDuel to get involved with the Liberty could be the appeal of the franchise's No. 1 draft pick in the 2020 WNBA draft. The Liberty are expected to select national superstar Sabrina Ionescu who has brought a whole new set of eyes and excitement to the women's game herself with the attention she has drawn.
The WNBA draft is scheduled to take place virtually on April 17 at 7:00 pm ET on ESPN.
