Women’s Final Four Preview: Infinity War Edition

Women’s Final Four Preview: Infinity War Edition

Marvel's upcoming super-crossover Avengers: Infinity War and the NCAA women's basketball Final Four are basically the same thing. They both feature intrigue, incredible feats of heroism (see Morgan William's shot last year), and a big purple guy with a weird glove.

Ok, the last one might be exclusive to Infinity War, but in order for you to wrap your head around what is probably the biggest crossover event in history, I'm here today to compare each Women's Final Four team to an Avenger.

Now, when I say Avenger, I'm gonna make it easy and define it as any character who will appear in Infinity War. I'm not sure if that's the most technically correct definition, but it's the one we're going to be rolling with.

Additionally, I'm only taking into account what's happened in Marvel movies, and not any comic books. I have enough time on my hands to watch a lot of movies, but not necessarily to read every superhero storyline ever written. If you strongly disagree with my comparisons and would like to argue about it, feel free to yell at me on Twitter @befox21 or @HEROSportsWBB.

So put on your infinity stone headband and lace up your vibranium suit, it's about to go down!

UConn – Vison

Is Vision really an Avenger? By my definition, yes. Is the UConn women's basketball program human? Last year, Mississippi State proved that occasionally they are.

Vision is basically a combination of Tony Stark's robot butler thing JARVIS and an Infinity Stone, supposedly the most powerful thing in the universe and basis of this little war we're about to see at the end of April.

UConn is basically a combination of robot-like efficiency and one of the most powerful basketball minds in the universe, Geno Auriemma. The Huskies have so many players who can beat you, from Napheesa Collier to Katie Lou Samuelson to Gabby Williams to Crystal Dangerfield, who showed why she deserves some respect with her 21 point effort in the Elite Eight against South Carolina.

Vision has a lot of weapons as well. He's got laser vison like Superman and he can fly like Superman and he pretty much can't be killed…like Superman. He's basically Superman. Does the Marvel version have a kryptonite? Notre Dame is about to find out.

Notre Dame – Scarlet Witch

Let's cut to the chase on Scarlet Witch. She can do magic. And what Muffet McGraw has done with Notre Dame this season is nothing short of magical. The Fighting Irish have suffered more ACL tears (four) than losses (three) this season. How the Hall-of-Fame coach has managed to navigate through it all and still make the Final Four is hard to fathom, so I'm chalking it up to magic.

Notre Dame star Arike Ogunbowale is also nothing short of magical with the basketball in her hands. Exhibit A: this crossover.

That crossover tho… pic.twitter.com/1AbmvCY2Rc

In Captain America: Civil War, Scarlet Witch was the only one who could slow down Vision for even a second. We'll see how Notre Dame does with UConn on Friday night.

Mississippi State – Ant-Man

I'm gonna be up-front, this comparison is based on a singular joke that may or may not be extremely funny.

Two of Mississippi State's best players are 6-foot-7 Teaira McCowan and 5-foot-5 (and that's generous) Morgan William. For the record, William's nickname is Itty Bitty. Likewise, Ant-Man can shrink to a subatomic size (as seen in the movie Ant-Man), or grow to be about 40 feet tall (as seen in the movie Captain America: Civil War).

I think my work here is done.

Louisville – Black Panther

First of all, both Louisville women's basketball and Black Panther are a lot of fun to watch. Whether it's Asia Durr spotting up 15 feet behind the three point line or Myisha Hines-Allen and Sam Fuehring dominating in the low post, it's always a good time when you watch the Cardinals shoot some hoops.

Black Panther was the best Marvel movie by far in my estimation. I could go on for a while listing its many amazing qualities, but you've either seen it and you know or you need to stop reading this article and go watch immediately.

In this NCAA tournament, Louisville's out here looking like their plays are powered by vibranium. Their smallest margin of victory was a ridiculous 18 points against Marquette in the second round. They've cruised through his tournament looking as cool as T'Challa chasing an arms dealer through the streets of Busan.

Predictions

Vision gets the better of Scarlet Witch in their rematch from Civil War. He is literally the embodiment of the most powerful thing in the universe. Magic has nothing on that.

On the other side, I think that Black Panther uses his superior technology and badassness to best the size changing prowess of Ant-Man, before eventually falling to Vision in the championship.
