The Cowboys won 20 games a year ago, reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons and finished fifth in the Big 12 regular-season standings, all despite an 0-6 start to conference play. The league's coaches expect similar struggles from them this year, and this time there will be no recovery.
Following the departure of head coach Brad Underwood from his "dream job" to apparently his other "dream job" at Illinois and losses of Jawun Evans to the NBA and Leyton Hammonds and Phil Forte to graduation — not to mention the program's role in the college basketball scandal — they're projected to finish dead last this season, comfortably earning the dubious distinction in the preseason coaches' poll.
Preseason CBB Rankings: No. 1 (Duke) to No. 351 (North Carolina A&T)
Oklahoma State and first-year coach Mike Boynton Jr. received just 10 total points:
|RANK||TEAM (1ST-PLACE VOTES)||POINTS|
|2||West Virginia (1)||71|
While not surprising given the roster and coaching turnover, they do return one of the league's best players in guard Jeffrey Carroll, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound senior who averaged 17.5 points and 6.6 rebounds in just 29 minutes per game a year ago.
And it took Carroll and the Cowboys just a couple hours to respond to the poll with an awesome "Motivation" video.
