The Ohio State Buckeyes gained a valuable year of experience after a tournament run a year ago. HERO Sports spoke with head coach Geoff Carlston about the 2016 season:
HERO: Which players will log significant minutes for your team this year?
Carlston: The starters that are back; Taylor Hughes, Audra Appold, and Taylor Sandbothe,
HERO: What will be the biggest difference between this year's team and last year's team?
Carlston: We have a really good leadership group and we did last year too. We had more freshmen last year then last year, but our learning curve will be more this year.
HERO: Which newcomers do you think will make the biggest impact for your team this season?
Carlston:: Madison Smeathers is doing a really nice job. She’s been doing great things. Brooke Bailey came in last year during the spring, so she’s got half a semester jump start.
HERO: Which players do you expect to lead the team this season?
Carlston: Our senior group — we have four seniors with a lot of experience, so they will be strong leaders.
HERO: Is there one game you have circled on your calendar as your 'Game of the Year'?
Carlston: It’s going to be a big season, we are going to be forced to learn about ourselves early on. The Big Ten is going to be even stronger than last year, which is crazy to say, but I think this will be the strongest the Big Ten will ever be.
HERO: Is there anything else you want fans to know about your team?
Carlston: One of the things unique to our program is, I’ve been here nine years and we’ve never had a kid on scholarship transfer — our kids have stayed and graduated. Our culture and program is something we’re really proud of. We’ve had a few walk-ons along the way that we’ve helped get scholarships. So, that’s something we’re really proud of. We have a great group. We have kids from all over and we’re a pretty creative interesting group.
