Returning with more experience to a talented group of starters, the Purdue women's volleyball team is primed for a successful 2016 season. Head coach Dave Shondell spoke to HERO Sports about the upcoming season.
HERO: Which players will log significant minutes for your team this year?
Schondell: Ashley Evans, setter; Azariah Stahl, 6-rotation OH, Faye Adelaja – MB, Danielle Cuttino – OH/MB, Sherridan Atkinson – Opposite, Blake Mohler – MB/OH, Brooke Peters – Libero/DS, Natalie Haben – DS/Libero.
HERO: What will be the biggest difference between this year's team and last year's team?
Schondell: Experience. Although (a lot of the team's) ball-control graduated, spring season indicated we passed and defended well. Loss of All-American Annie Drews is significant, but with outstanding athletes, I believe we can fill the gaps.
HERO: Which newcomers do you think will make the biggest impact for your team this season?
Schondell: Blake Mohler is a redshirt freshman that is a terrific athlete, but clearly inexperienced. Great arm and very explosive. Sophomore transfer Sherridan Atkinson should be a huge presence at 6'6 with a big arm. Natalie Haben is special and will compete for the libero spot.
HERO: Which players do you expect to lead the team this season? Please name the captains if you know them.
Schondell: Our team leaders are lone senior Faye Adelaja, and juniors Ashley Evans, Azariah Stahl, and Danielle Cuttino – all returning starters.
HERO: Is there one game you have circled on your calendar as your 'Game of the Year'?
Schondell: The first one. Beyond that, they are all challenges.
HERO: Is there anything else you want fans to know about your team?
Schondell: I like our team. We will be a little green in spots, but have the physical size and dynamics to be very impressive. Our squad should be top-20 worthy, but so might 10 teams in our league.
