The BYU women's volleyball have four returning starters this season, two of them seniors, suggesting some continuity from their strong 2015 that ended in the quarterfinals of the tournament a season ago. HERO Sports spoke to head coach Heather Olmstead about what to expect from her squad this year.
HERO: Which players will log significant minutes for your team this year?
Olmstead: We have an experienced senior class that will be key contributors to our team this season; Amy Boswell, Whitney Young-Howard, and Makenna Santiago.
HERO: What will be the biggest difference between this year's team and last year's?
Olmstead: We graduated a 4-year starter on the outside, a 4-year starter at libero, and a 3-year starter at setter. The biggest difference will be figuring out who will fill in those positions and seeing what our team's strengths will be.
HERO: Which newcomers do you think will make the biggest impact for your team this season?
Olmstead: Every newcomer has a chance to impact the team in their own way. Since we graduated an outside hitter and a libero, I would say McKenna Miller, Mary Lake, and Tristyn Moser have a chance to compete for some playing time. Our two new middles have a great opportunity from our senior middles and impact our team for the future.
HERO: Which players do you expect to lead the team this season? Please name the captains if you know them.
Olmstead: I expect our seniors and juniors to lead the team because they know the culture of the BYU volleyball program and how we represent BYU.
HERO: Is there one game you have circled as 'Game of the Year'?
Olmstead: The next match up on our schedule is "match of the year" because every match matters the same amount. We try to stay in the moment and take it one match at a time.
HERO: Is there anything else you want fans to know about your team?
Olmstead: We have a great group of young women who love to compete and play volleyball. They do a fantastic job representing Brigham Young University in the classroom and on the court. They really love each other as teammates and friends, as well as loving the process of getting better every day.
