SOUTH CENTRAL: BR-47 Angelo State 9, BR-10 St. Edward's 2
Angelo State became the first team to punch their ticket to Cary with a convincing 9-2 win over St. Edward’s in Sunday’s South Central Regional championship game in Grand Junction, Colo.
Jarryd Klemm’s RBI single to left center field in the top of the first opened the scoring for Angelo State as they took a 1-0 lead. The Rams heated up in the top of the second, scoring three runs in the frame on an Elias Aguirre RBI double, a Sam Koehler sacrifice fly and a Paxton DeLaGarza RBI single to extend their lead to 4-0. Steven Pinales drilled a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to further pad the Angelo lead to 6-0.
The Hilltoppers tried to chip away at the lead, as Joe Olson’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh knocked in two runs to cut the lead to 6-2. The Rams, however, added three runs in the top of the eighth to ice the win.
Joe Hauser (5-2) picked up the win for Angelo State, throwing 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jayden O’Dell, while Graylon Brown earned his 12th save of the season after going the final 2 1/3 innings. Eric Hester (10-3), who lasted just 1 1/3 innings, took the loss for St. Edward’s.
