We’ve posted a preview for all 15 D2 football conferences, but we can’t forget about the six schools currently not affiliated with a conference heading into 2016. By the time the 2017 season approaches, this group will narrow from six to two.
The three indy schools in Super Region 4 – Alderson-Broaddus, Kentucky Wesleyan and Malone – will shed their status when their primary conference, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, officially begins its sponsorship of football. The league will welcome five football members to the league in 2017 – Findlay, Hillsdale, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican and Walsh.
As for the Super Region 2 independents, North Greenville (Conference Carolinas) will begin an associate membership with the Gulf South Conference starting next season. As for this season, the Crusaders are piecing together a schedule, mostly consisting of South Atlantic Conference members as holdovers from their former scheduling alliance with that league.
Limestone and UNC-Pembroke will officially be independent next season, but both schools will maintain a scheduling alliance with the SAC. Limestone is in the third season of their scheduling agreement with the SAC, while UNC-Pembroke’s scheduling arrangement starts next season. Both schools, however, will not be eligible for a conference championship or all-conference honors.
And, with that, we close out our 2016 D2 football previews with a look at the six independent schools, including preseason D2 football rankings by BennettRank and capsule previews. Use your arrow keys or the arrow buttons above and below to navigate the team-by-team previews.
