The No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs will play the No. 8 Northwestern Wildcats in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament after each team survived and advanced on the opening day of play in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
Gonzaga struggled early in the first round against South Dakota State, and trailed before a seven-point run helped them go into the half up 26-22. From there, Gonzaga took control on the way to a 66-46 blowout win, keeping alive a perfect streak for No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament.
The Bulldogs were led by 16 points from Jordan Mathews, with three other players scoring 10 points each.
Northwestern, meanwhile, took home a victory in a thriller against Vanderbilt. The 8-9 matchup didn't disappoint, as the Wildcats trailed late, but got some help on a Vanderbilt foul that allowed Northwestern to take a lead with the clock stopped and only seconds left.
It was no surprise that point guard Bryant McIntosh led the way for the Wildcats, leading Northwestern to a victory in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance
This will, of course, be the first meeting of these two teams in the NCAA Tournament.
