A little secret for you here. College basketball players kind of have a thing for sneakers. They especially have a thing for sneakers from the Jordan brand. That is why the North Carolina players as a unit lost their mind after head coach Roy Williams was presented with an extremely custom pair of Jordans after the coach secured his 800th with on Monday night with an 85-68 win over ACC rivals Syracuse.
The win was treated like the big deal that it was. After the game, with basically no one in the crowd having left, Williams was treated to recorded video messages from his former players congratulating him on being the second fastest coach in history to reach the 800 win plateau. With a winning percentage of .790 over his 1,012 games, only Adolph Rupp (972 games) got their faster.
Williams joins Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Rollie Massimino, and Bob Huggins as the only active coaches to have achieved this impressive mark.
The highlight of the celebration though was the reaction of Williams and his players to the commemorative pair of Air Jordans signed by the former Tar Heel legend. Williams seemed excited enough by the shoes, but his players were impressed to such a level that one of them LITERALLY FELL DOWN after the reveal.
The only sad part here is that the actions were not reversed. While the displays of emotion are fine and funny, how much better would it have been if the unflappable Williams was the one to hit the deck in excitement. Sure, this is a bit of a long shot, but think of the memes that we would have today if this had been the case.
The shoes are clearly priceless, but if Williams ever decides to get rid of them he clearly has a roster full of potential buyers!
