"We are incredibly excited to introduce a first-of-its-kind in season tournament for our league and present more regular-season games on ABC, increasing the WNBA's national television exposure," said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. "The 2020 schedules gives fans even more opportunities to see the best players in the world compete at the highest level and highlights the ABC/ESPN family's continued commitment to the WNBA and women's sports."
The announcement of the inaugural Commissioners Cup is the first of its kind in the history of the league. It will feature a 10-game regular-season competition that counts toward Cup play. The top two teams from each conference with the best record will compete for a Commissioner's Cup title and prize money, which is tentatively scheduled to be played on Friday, August 14.
Cup games include each teams first home game and first road game against all five conference rivals, all of which take place prior to July 10. "The Commissioner's Cup offers fans another competition through which to support their favorite teams and adds a new dimension to the season for our players and teams," said Engelbert.
