Which College Basketball Teams Have the Most, Fewest Points Per Possession?

Villanova does not have the fastest offense in college basketball. The Wildcats do, however, have the most efficient offense in basketball.

Villanova ranks first in the Big East and fifth in the country in scoring average (87.8) because Jalen Brunson is leading an offense that rarely takes bad shots and almost never wastes possessions. They rank seventh in the Big East and 142nd nationally in offensive possessions per game (72.6), which is actually a huge jump from last year's group, whose 67 possessions per game ranked dead last in the conference and 328th overall.

Of the 141 teams that have more possessions per game than the Wildcats, none score more points per possession. Villanova is averaging 1.209 points per trip down the court, which would be the highest mark in nearly 20 years and their fourth straight season finishing in the nation's top 10.

Duke (1.2) is the only other team averaging at least 1.2 points per possession but there are 34 others above 1.1, including Big East foes Creighton (10th, 1.146) and Xavier (11th, 1.145). Coppin State and their 0.815 points per possession rank last of the 351 teams. The Eagles are one of 15 teams averaging fewer than 0.9 points per possession.

Here are the best and worst teams in points per possession season season (via Team Rankings, through Monday, Jan. 29).
