The time has come to honor the best tennis players in the country at the D2 level with the honorees for HERO of The Week. Each week we will have a list of nominees for you to vote for that stood out in competition over the week prior.
Voting will take place in the poll at the bottom of this article following the list of nominees. Voting only takes place in the poll, and the voting will close on Friday at 10:00 a.m. PST for each poll.
Without further ado, here are the nominees for HERO of The Week!
Jean Baptist Mateo, Lynn
In stunning fashion, Mateo knocked off the top ranked player in D2 – Thomas Grinberg of Saint Leo – in straight sets to kick off a big win for Lynn in the NCAA Tournament. This was the first loss for Grinberg in the entire 2018 calendar year.
Jorge Vargas, Columbus State
Vargas was in the last round of singles play but came away with a big 6-1, 6-1 win. That helped his team to a 5-1 win in the NCAA Tournament.
Thomas McIntosh, West Virginia Wesleyan
WV Wesleyan was not able to advance in the NCAA Tournament, but McIntosh put out his best effort in a match win over Mercyhurst. He ended up winning the fifth round of singles play 6-1, 6-2.
Carlos Anez, SE Oklahoma State
Anez led off play against SW Baptist with a big upset of the fifth-ranked player in D2 in three sets. Ranked 19th himself, this helped SE keep the match close before eventually falling.
Eirik Groner, Lander
Groner led off singles play in a dual match NCAA Tournament match with a big win over a foe from Flagler. Ranked 40th in the country, Groner ended up taking out the 21st ranked player in the country.
