Only 8 teams remain undefeated in NCAA basketball play across all divisions and genders, and two of them come from Whitman. The men's and women's basketball teams have yet to lose to NCAA competition on the season.
The men's team heads into Wednesday with a 21-0 record and the No. 1 spot in the D3 coaches poll. The women, who lost their season opener to NAIA Eastern Oregon, are 20-1 on the season, but a perfect 20-0 against NCAA competition and come in at No. 2 in the D3 coaches poll.
No other school in the country has a pair of teams undefeated against NCAA competition, and as we noted above (and the full list is below), only six other basketball teams across the NCAA have undefeated records — five women's teams and one men's team.
The Whitman women are led by all-around contributor Casey Poe, who leads the team in points (17.3), assists (3.6), steals (2.2) and blocks (1.6). Makana Stone adds 13.2 points per game and leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game, while Emily Rommel adds 10.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Joey Hewitt paces the men's team averaging 18.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, with Tim Howell right behind averaging 17.5 points. Austin Butler leads the team in assists (4.1), steals (3.4) and blocks (1.8), and Ben Beatie is the team's leading rebounder with 5.0 per game.
The two teams are next in action Saturday against George Fox.
