Sports Media Internships

HERO Sports is seeking talented and versatile writers and videographers to cover college sports across the country. Our Campus Correspondent Program provides an opportunity for college students to gain real world experience creating sports news, while building their writing/video portfolio. HERO Sports articles are viewed 8+ million times a month, making it one of the two most popular college sports website in the world. You will work closely with our team of experienced writers, producers and editors to gain unique access to and experience within the sports media world. We aim to amplify stories from every sport and division, whether it’s an interview with a new coach or a great highlight.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

Writers

HERO Sports Campus Correspondents are passionate about their team/conference/division/sport, and that passion shines through in their writing. They are active in their outreach to players, coaches, and athletic departments, finding the stories no one else can.

Requirements: Writers should aim to submit two publish-ready pieces (with photos) a week. Content should remain relevant to the reader for at least 7 days after submission and include interviews if possible.

Reporters

Our video reporters are tasked with capturing the dynamic elements of the games and events they cover. Whether you prefer to work in front of the camera or behind it, our producers are talented editors who know how to transform a good story into an exceptional production. Content should remain relevant to the reader for at least 7 days after submission and include interviews if possible.

Requirements: Once you receive your HERO Sports media kit (mic flag & lower thirds template), you’re ready to start submitting your videos. All videos are created, edited, and produced, by the campus correspondent and uploaded to your individual YouTube account.

  • Video content must be under 2 minutes
  • Lower thirds must appear for reporter and every interviewee
  • Use HERO Sports mic flags
  • Correspondent stand up
  • Avoid words like today, tomorrow or anything that will time stamp content

  • Behind the Scenes
  • Meet the Mascot
  • Athletic Traditions unique to your campus
  • Rivalry – who it is / back story
  • A player or team reaches a notable milestone or academic achievement
  • An exciting event takes place on campus, eg. homecoming, hall of fame, etc.Any upset takes place
  • Athlete / Coach / Fan Profiles
  • Highlight of the season/week
  • Ask student athletes interview one another

  • This internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which students would receive in education environment.
  • The internship experience is for the benefit of the student intern.
  • Interns are not replacing regular writers/broadcaster/photographers, but working under close supervision of existing HERO Sports editors.
  • HERO Sports derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded.
  • Campus correspondent are not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship.
  • HERO Sports, and the intern, understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
