Be sure to stay hydrated when watching a game at Western State Colorado’s Mountaineer Bowl, especially if you’re not used to high altitudes (this reporter learned the hard way over the summer during a road trip to Denver and Colorado Springs for the RMAC Media Day).
Opened in 1948 and built into a hillside in Gunnison, the Mountaineer Bowl is billed as the 'highest collegiate football field in the world,' sitting 7,771 feet above sea level, where oxygen levels “are approximately 24 percent less than at sea level,” according to Western State. The Mountaineers have won 19 RMAC championships during their time at the Mountaineer Bowl, with views of several of Coloardo’s largest mountains, which stand at over 14,000 feet.
Although the Mountaineers haven’t won an RMAC crown since 1997, their stadium is certainly worth a visit.
