Louisiana Tech Head Coach Sonny Cumbie’s Background
Before becoming Louisiana Tech’s head coach, Cumbie was a successful offensive coordinator.
He was an OC and quarterbacks coach at Texas Tech in 2021, eventually finishing the year as the team’s interim head coach. He began his collegiate coaching career there as a graduate assistant under Mike Leach in 2009 after being the head coach and director of player personnel for the Indoor Football League’s San Angelo Stampede. He played for the Red Raiders in college and led the nation with 4,742 passing yards as a senior in 2004.
He coached inside wide receivers at Texas Tech from 2010-12 as well. He then was the team’s co-offensive coordinator and outside receivers coach in 2013.
He went on to be TCU’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2014-16 and the Horned Frogs’ OC and QBs coach from 2017-20. TCU’s offenses were among the best in the Big 12 during that time.
