UTSA’s 2024 season didn’t begin as hoped.
After a win over Kennesaw State, UTSA lost to in-state opponents Texas State and Texas by a collective score of 105-17. The Roadrunners also dropped three of their first four AAC contests.
But they bounced back with a three-game winning streak to earn bowl-eligibility. UTSA concluded the season with a Myrtle Beach Bowl victory, 44-15, over Coastal Carolina.
Will the Roadrunners manage to keep that momentum going into 2025?

Key UTSA Football Returners
2024 All-AAC Honorable Mention
OL Cory Godinet
Owen McCown Returns For Experienced UTSA Offense
After a solid 2024 season, Owen McCown is back at quarterback for the Roadrunners.
He threw for 3,424 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 63% of his passes. He also ran for 340 yards and three touchdowns.
UTSA also brings back running back Robert Henry Jr. He led the Roadrunners with 706 rushing yards to go with seven touchdowns on the ground. He added 199 yards and a score on 21 receptions a season ago.
UTSA’s receiving corps is also loaded with experience. The Roadrunners return eight of their top nine receivers from a year ago. That includes Willie McCoy, who led the team with 536 yards through the air while scoring four touchdowns on 28 catches. Tight end Houston Thomas is back after tallying 470 yards and three touchdowns on 34 catches. Wide receiver Devin McCuin led the team with 45 catches and five receiving touchdowns while recording 424 yards in eight games and is also back.
UTSA also returns four of five primary starters on the offensive line, including guard Cory Godinet, who made the All-AAC honorable mention list a season ago.
That’s a good amount of experience returning for an offense that was second in the AAC in total offense (452.5 yards per game) and fourth in scoring offense (33.2 points per game) a season ago.
UTSA’s defense, though, is a different story. The Roadrunners lost their top five tacklers from a season ago, including Jimmori Robinson. He led the team with 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. Zah Frazier, after pacing UTSA with six interceptions, is now on the Chicago Bears.
Owen Pewee is the team’s leading returning tackler. He totaled 41 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, as well as two sacks in 2024.
The Roadrunners did prioritize defense in the transfer portal. They’re hoping those new players mesh and help them improve on that side of the ball. They were outside of the top five in the AAC in total defense (375.2 yards per game allowed) and scoring defense (30.1 points per game allowed) in 2024.
UTSA Football Season Prediction
I predict UTSA won’t win the AAC and will go Under 7.5 wins. But I expect the Roadrunners will ultimately be above .500 and will appear in a bowl game.
I just think their schedule is too tough for them to get to eight wins. Their non-conference slate includes games against Texas A&M, Texas State, Incarnate Word, and Colorado State. That’s a Power Four school, two solid Group of Five programs, and a tough FCS team as well.
If I were to anticipate that the Roadrunners went 2-2 there, I don’t know if they’ll be capable of going 6-2 in league play. Road clashes against North Texas and USF won’t be easy. UTSA also takes on Tulane, East Carolina, and Army at home.
UTSA is absolutely capable of winning some of those games. But I think there’s three losses in that group of matchups for the Roadrunners.
That said, a winning record and another bowl game is more than doable for the 2025 UTSA squad.
