NFL ROSTERS: What Happened To FCS Players?

NFL ROSTERS: What Happened To FCS Players?

The FCS had 309 products in NFL camps in August preseason work, but the reality of pro football is that the 90-man rosters get trimmed to 53-man active rosters in one day. A lot of guys who played well in the preseason are let go, some make practice squads and others get to celebrate making the final active roster. In all, 136 FCS products are on active NFL rosters as of Thursday's opening game between Chicago and Green Bay, and another 72 were retained on practice squads or reserve lists. You can see who made it and who didn't in our list below.

So how does all this work? Well, at the end of the preseason the NFL requires teams to drop the 90-man roster (some teams have fewer than 90) down to a 53-man active roster. Every team is allowed to sign 10 players to their "practice squad" and they practice with the team but can't play in a game until they're made "active" and room is made by another roster player being released or being put on the reserve list, etc. Practice squad players make a minimum of $8,000 per week or $136,000 annually, but teams can opt to pay them more if they want to. Other players may be listed as "Reserve" which can be because of an injury or maybe not being able to pass their physical ("IR"- Injured Reserve or "PUP" – Physically Unable to Perform) or various other reasons.

In our list below, in the instances where you see "STARTER-WR" or "2nd-LG" this indicates the active 53-man roster participants and where they're listed on their opening-game depth charts for their respective teams (Starter, 2nd team, 3rd team, etc), along with the specific position like "LG" meaning offensive left guard, for instance. In most instances, a 3rd teamer (or in rare occasions 4th teamer) usually means the player has been retained mostly for special teams duties, but is also a reserve on offense or defense.
