In maybe the weirdest interview I’ve ever conducted, I got the chance to FaceTime with Texas Lutheran’s “Double Wide Dream” and their rooster Wilbur, and was granted exclusive access to their photoshoot (yep, that’s right).
Wilbur hung out on the dining room table while the guys (Michael Wall, Matt McCullough, Tyler Howlett, Casey Viator, and honorary Double Wide Dreamer and linebacker for TLU, Emory Cuzze) filled me in on their life with their chickens.
The guys have been friends since Day 1 of fall camp and in country boy fashion, have made the phrase “yee-yee” their own call-sign and Twitter handle — @yeeyeedwd.
Viator was the one who originally had the idea to get the chickens. His grandparents hatched the chicks for them and he kept them at his house for two months before moving into the double wide. Howlett then drove four hours with them in the car to bring them home. When asked how it went, he laughed and said, “well, all ten made it!”
In the two months they’ve had the them, the guys assured me the fowl had only been in the house three or four times. Nonetheless, they’ve really bonded with the birds, even letting one sleep with Wall as we showed in the previous article (a photo he assured me it was a joke) and most recently, movie night (they watched Fury).
Wilbur however, stole the show, and was the most chatty throughout the interview. When asked why he was the house favorite, one of the guys responded,
“I don’t know, just look at him.”
