Welcome to the 2022 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Leading up to Week 0 games on Aug. 27, HERO Sports will name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-0. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on last season’s rosters.
The 99-0 countdown central page can be found here.
Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2021 rosters.
74: Garret Greenfield, OL (Sr.) — South Dakota State
SDSU going from a good to a great offensive line has led the Jackrabbits to new heights as an FCS program. The o-line was arguably the best unit in the FCS during the spring’s run to the national title game.
A standout up front the last two seasons is Greenfield. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound tackle was dominant in the spring, earning First Team All-American accolades from HERO Sports, Stats Perform, Phil Steele, Athlon Sports, the AP, and the AFCA. Greenfield then started all 15 games last fall as SDSU advanced to the semifinals. The Jacks finished 10th in FCS rushing offense (211.5 yards per game) and 12th in sacks allowed (1.13 per game).
SDSU is loaded with 2023 NFL Draft talent, a reason it is No. 2 in our Preseason Top 25. The Jacks have four players in the Top 34 of Josh Buchanan’s 2023 Top 100 Small School Prospects (not including junior TE and 2023 pro prospect Tucker Kraft) and three in the Top 11, including Greenfield at No. 11.
While his fellow SDSU o-linemen Wes Genant, Aron Johnson, and Mason McCormick deservedly earned All-MVFC honors last season, Greenfield was left empty-handed. He will be motivated to replicate the postseason awards he gathered in the spring.
