Two teams looking to get back to their winning ways meet when FAU visits Memphis in American Conference action.

Florida Atlantic (14-7, 6-2) saw its five-game winning streak snapped during Sunday’s 89-75 loss at South Florida. After leading by three points at halftime, FAU was outscored 56-39 in the second half.

A big difference came at the free-throw line. FAU was 14-for-19 (.737) while South Florida went 22-for-31 (.710). South Florida had a 29-18 advantage in second-chance points and a 49-35 rebounding edge. Devin Vanterpool, a 6-foot-4 redshirt sophomore, led FAU with 22 points, his seventh game this season with 20 or more points.

Memphis (9-10, 4-3) lost its second in a row during Saturday’s 74-59 defeat at Wichita State. The winning Shockers led 40-22 at halftime and never let up.

Memphis shot just 3-of-19 from three-point range (.158) and committed 17 turnovers.

Tipoff for Florida Atlantic at Memphis is shortly after 8 p.m. ET.

The game will be televised on ESPN2.

FAU at Memphis Prediction

I like Memphis laying the points.

While Memphis has struggled on the road (1-6), the Tigers are 8-2 at FedExForum. FAU is just 3-4 on the road. Memphis has a 17-game home winning streak against American Conference opponents.

The Tigers will have to do a better job on the boards.

Rebounding was such a big factor in the previous meeting, and the season statistics favor FAU, which has a 5.0 rebounding margin, compared to -0.1 for Memphis.

These two first met on Jan. 11, with FAU winning 89-78 at home. The Owls led by two at halftime and then outscored Memphis 53-44 in the second half. FAU had a 46-29 edge in rebounding and a 19-8 advantage in second-chance points. Devin Williams, a 6-foot-10 redshirt sophomore, had a career-high seven blocked shots for FAU, while Vanterpool contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists.

Memphis averages 73.2 points per game while allowing 73.3, thus helping explain the sub-.500 record. FAU averages 82.7 points while allowing 73.7.

FAU shoots .342 from three-point range, although the Owls shot just 8-for-28 (.286) in the earlier win over Memphis.

The Tigers are shooting .332 from three-point range, but are second in the American in three-point percentage defense, allowing teams to shoot .301. Florida Atlantic’s opponents are shooting .340 from three-point range.

Dug McDaniel, a 5-foot-11 senior and Kansas State transfer, is averaging a team-high 13.4 points for Memphis. He is the Tigers’ only double-figure scorer. Memphis does have seven other players averaging between 6.2 and 9.3 points per game.

Memphis’ second-leading scorer, Sincere Parker (9.3 PPG), suffered a foot injury in the first minute of an 83-66 loss on Jan. 21 at Tulsa and hasn’t played since. His status is unknown for the FAU game.

One of the keys for the Tigers will be the play of 7-foot-1 junior Aaron Bradshaw, who began his career at Kentucky and played last year at Ohio State.

Over the past five games, Bradshaw has averaged 11.8 points and 6.3 boards while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor. The second of those five games was the loss to FAU, when Bradshaw scored a season-high 21 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. He also had five rebounds and a blocked shot in 27 minutes, the second-most minutes he has played this year.

Vanterpool leads FAU with a 15.9 scoring average, while 6-foot-3 junior Kanaan Carlyle averages 14.3 points.
