The VCU men’s basketball team is heading to the 2026 NCAA Tournament after winning the Atlantic 10. In the A10 tournament, it defeated Duquesne 71-66, Saint Joseph’s 77-64, and Dayton 70-62 in the championship game to clinch the auto-bid.
The Rams are 27-7 overall entering the Big Dance and on a 6-game winning streak.
VCU NCAA Tournament Appearances
In 2026, VCU basketball will make its 21st appearance in the Division I NCAA Tournament.
The Rams also reached the tourney in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1996, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025.

VCU Basketball NCAA Tournament Wins
VCU has won 14 games in the Division I NCAA Tournament. The Rams have a 14-21 overall record in the Big Dance after losing in the 2026 Second Round.
They own tournament wins over Long Island in 1981, La Salle in 1983, Northeastern in 1984, Marshall in 1985, Duke in 2007, USC/Georgetown/Purdue/Florida State/Kansas in a 2011 Final Four run, Wichita State in 2012, Akron in 2013, Oregon State in 2016, and North Carolina in 2026.
VCU Sweet 16 Appearances
The Rams have reached the Sweet Sixteen one time in 2011, also advancing to the Final Four that year.
VCU defeated USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State, and Kansas before losing to Butler in the Final Four.
VCU Basketball Coach Phil Martelli Jr.
Phil Martelli Jr. is in his first season leading the VCU program. He was named the 14th head coach on March 26, 2025, after Ryan Odom took the Virginia HC job.
Martelli previously spent time at Bryant from 2018 to 2025. He was the associate head coach from 2020-23 and the head coach from 2023-25. As the HC, Martelli finished 43-25 overall.
He led Bryant to the America East regular season and tournament championships in 2024-25.
