Saban made seven coaching stops from 1973-89 before getting his first head-coaching at Toledo in 1990. He won nine games, matching the program's fourth-highest win total at the time, before resigning to become defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns .
His first win was in his first game, September 8 at Miami (OH). The Rockets won 20-14.
