North Carolina head coach Mack Brown's base salary is nearly $1 million higher than that of his predecessor, Larry Fedora.
Brown was introduced on Tuesday, three days after the Tar Heels ended their two-win regular season with a home loss to North Carolina State and just two days after Fedora was fired. Fedora signed a seven-year extension after the 2016 season, his fifth in Chapel Hill. Two years later, he's gone and owed a buyout of $12 million, or $3 million for each of the remaining four years on his contract.
Despite the massive buyout, North Carolina didn't go cheap in hiring his replacement, Mack Brown. The 67-year-old Brown signed a five-year deal with an average annual base salary or $3.5 million, which puts him (roughly) within the top one-quarter of highest-paid FBS head coaches. Fedora's base salary for his final year was $2,575,000, though there was potential for up to $900,000 in bonuses.
As of Tuesday, North Carolina had not released the entire contract, which would include additional details like buyout and bonus structure.
