Alabama's overtime victory over Georgia in last year's College Football Playoff National Championship was the Crimson Tide's fifth title since 2009. And with Auburn's title in 2010, the state of Alabama has won six of the last nine national championships and owns 13 championships since 1936, the first year the AP declared a national champion.
Entering the 2009 season, the state of Alabama's seven titles were tied with Oklahoma for third-most among all states, trailing Florida (10) and Indiana (eight). Now entering the 2018 season, the state of Alabama ranks first with the 13 titles, well ahead of Indiana (eight) and Oklahoma (seven) and two ahead of Florida (11).

The state accounts for 15.9 percent of all titles (AP, 1936-97; BCS, 1998-2013; CFP, 2014-present) since 1936 and leads four states — Florida, Indiana and Oklahoma — that account for nearly 50 percent of all championships in the last eight decades. Those four states have won 39 of the 82 championships, or 47.6 percent.
Alabama owns 11 of the state's 13 titles, while Auburn has the other two. Florida's 11 titles were won by three different teams: Miami (five), Florida (three) and Florida State (three). Notre Dame has all eight of Indiana's titles and Oklahoma has all seven of their state's titles.
Only 19 states account for all 82 total championships. Six states have at least five titles and 12 states have at least three titles. Colorado, Georgia, Maryland and Utah are the only states with one title.
