UTSA Football Prediction: Game-By-Game Predictions for the Roadrunners in 2020

UTSA Football Prediction: Game-By-Game Predictions for the Roadrunners in 2020

Six years ago, Jeff Traylor was head coach at Gilmer (Texas) High School and preparing for a season opener vs. Liberty-Eylau High School (Texarkana, Texas). Now, Jeff Traylor is a first-year, first-time FBS head coach at UTSA preparing for a season opener vs. defending national champion LSU during the most bizarre offseason in college football history.

UTSA, ranked 121st in the HERO Sports Preseason College Football Rankings, has waded through mediocrity and national irrelevance since Larry Coker led them to 15 wins in their first two seasons. They're hitting reset with another former SEC assistant who, like Frank Wilson, seems primed to win at a program boiling with potential. That potential likely won't manifest itself for a few years as Traylor and his staff scramble to install new schemes on both sides of the ball despite no spring practice or in-person offseason programs.

This is not the 121st-most-talented roster in the FBS; in potential 1,500-yard running back Sincere McCormack (above), young talent in the receivers' room, three returning starters on the offensive line, defensive tackle Jaylon Haynes, and others, UTSA's talent doesn't reflect their recent season win totals, nor does it explain why they ranked among the nation's worst in most areas last season, including points per play (116th), yards per play (107th), third-down conversions (109th), opponents' points per play (123rd), and turnover margin (97th).

The schedule isn't dramatically different than last year with LSU replacing Baylor, Grambling replacing Incarnate Word, and Memphis replacing Army. Three wins should be their floor (as predicted below), and with a few other winnable games, there's a real chance at five wins for the first time since 2017.

Date Opponent Prediction
Sept. 5 at LSU Loss (0-1)
Sept. 12 at Texas State Loss (0-2)
Sept. 19 vs. Grambling Win (1-2)
Sept. 26 vs. Memphis Loss (1-3)
Oct. 3 at UAB Loss (1-4)
Oct. 17 vs. Old Dominion Win (2-4)
Oct. 24 vs. Louisiana Tech Loss (2-5)
Oct. 31 at FAU Loss (2-6)
Nov. 7 at Rice Loss (2-7)
Nov. 14 vs. UTEP Win (3-7)
Nov. 21 at Southern Miss Loss (3-8)
Nov. 28 vs. North Texas Loss (3-9)
