Vanderbilt isn't the lowest-ranked Power Five (or SEC) team in the HERO Sports Preseason College Football Rankings, narrowly edging Arkansas by one spot. However, in earning the razor-thin edge in futility for 2020, what's the future for the Commodores? For Arkansas, we can see a future with Sam Pittman, Kendal Briles, and Barry Odom. For Vandy, we can't see anything.
Derek Mason has new coordinators entering, fair or not at arguably the most difficult Power Five job, a potential hot-seat season. He fired Gerry Gdowski after the Commodores scored 68 points over their final seven FBS games last year, and Jason Tarver after yielding 34 points to a horrific UNLV offense and ranking among the nation's worst in most areas, including yards per play (124th), yards per rush (5.7), sack rate (103rd), and takeaways (117th).

There are a few pieces of good news, namely the return of receiver Cam Johnson (above) for new coordinator Todd Fitch and veterans across the front seven for new coordinator Ted Roof, the former Duke head coach who was most recently App State defensive coordinator, but ultimately this is the least-talented roster in the Power Five. And after the departures of Kalija Lipscomb, Jared Pinkney, and Ke'Shawn Vaughn, Vandy has minimal high-end talent and literally zero depth at any position
Vandy will enter October with a .500 record after beating Colorado State in Week 4…but that's it. They won't win another game and post a winless SEC season for the first time since Derek Mason's first year, 2014.
