Washington State QB Luke Falk Completes His First 20 Passes of the Season

Washington State QB Luke Falk Completes His First 20 Passes of the Season

You knew Washington State quarterback Luke Falk would throw the ball. You should have known Falk would throw it well. But you would be forgiven if you didn't know Falk would throw the ball this well — at least not to start the season.

The senior quarterback came out red hot in the Cougs' season opener against Montana State, completing his first 20 passes en route to a 31-0 win.

Falk finished 33 of 39 for 311 yards and three touchdowns.

One of those was a six-yard score to Tavares Martin Jr. Falk's second TD pass of the day was the 91st of his career, which broke the Washington State career record for TD passes formerly held by Connor Halliday.

The short touchdown also moved Falk to No. 5 in the all-time Pac-12 TD pass leaderboard. He had added to that number by the end of the night:

1. Matt Barkley: 116 (USC, 2009-2012)
2. Marcus Mariota: 105 (Oregon, 2012–2014)
3. Matt Leinart: 99 (USC, 2003–2005)
4. Jared Goff: 96 (California, 2013–2015)
5. Luke Falk: 92 (Washington State, 2014-2017)

Falk's first pass of the second half fell incomplete, which meant he the fell just short of a new NCAA college football record for consecutive completions as well.

East Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis still owns the record. He completed his first 26 passes in a 2011 game against Navy to set the record. Davis finished the 38-35 win 40 for 45 for 372 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He had also completed his final 10 passes in the game prior, so the multi-game record for consecutive completions stands at 36.

Falk also came very close to the Pac-12 record — owned by former Cal QB Aaron Rodgers, who completed 23 straight passes over the first three quarters of a 23-17 loss at No. 1 USC in 2004.
