What Will Opening Weekend Stars Like Mason Fine and Sage Lewis Do for an Encore?

Week 1 is in the books and from LSU and Virginia Tech dominating a pair of Florida schools to Chip Kelly's rough start at UCLA, there was no shortage of surprising storylines. There was also zero shortage of eyebrow-raising stats and performances by under-the-radar athletes that started the 2018 FBS campaign with a bang.

Let's check out some of the biggest breakout stars from the opening weekend and the likelihood of a repeat performance in week 2.

Tyree Jackson — Buffalo, QB

If you're new to the Tyree Jackson bandwagon, please join me as I've been singing his praises for years now.

Plagued by injuries last season, the junior threw for an incredible six touchdowns in the first three quarters during a 48-10 romp over Delaware State.

Up Next: A more-than-winnable game at Temple after the Owls were carved up for 405 yards during a 19-17 home loss to FCS foe Villanova.

Justice Hansen — Arkansas State, QB

Speaking of tossing six touchdowns, Red Wolves signal-caller Justice Hansen picked up where he left off last season. After throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 37 touchdowns, Hansen carved up Southeast Missouri State for half a dozen TD passes, including three in the third quarter to go along with 423 yards in the air.

Up Next: Some team called the Alabama Crimson Tide.

JJ Arcega-Whiteside — Stanford, WR

The massive 6-3, 225-pound senior pulled down six catches for 226 yards and three scores in a 31-10 win over San Diego State on Friday night. After one game Arcega-Whiteside nearly has as many yards receiving as his entire sophomore year, and his evening was all the more impressive considering the 226 yards came on six receptions.

Up Next: A USC defense that gave up over 405 yards and multiple big plays to UNLV despite a 22-point win.

Mason Fine — North Texas, QB

Mason looked fine indeed against SMU as he torched the Mustangs for 444 yards and three touchdowns on an astounding 80% passing performance. At this pace, Fine will obliterate his 4,052 total yards passing from a year ago.

Up Next: Incarnate Word of the FCS before an exciting matchup week 3 between the Mean Green and Razorbacks of Arkansas.

Sage Lewis — Florida International, LB

Have a day, Sage Lewis.

The in-state recruit from Opa Locka amassed 18 tackles — 10 of which were solo — against a Big Ten opponent as his Panthers fell just short to Indiana, 38-28.

Up Next: Potentially another dominating performance by Lewis against an Old Dominion squad that could muster only 10 points and barely 300 yards of offense in a 52-10 thrashing at the hands of newly minted FBS program Liberty.

Artavis Pierce — Oregon State, RB

In an otherwise rough day in Columbus, Pierce ripped off 168 yards on 11 carries for two scores, including an impressive 80-yard sprint to the end zone. He also added three catches for 41 yards out of the backfield during his team's 77-31 opening day loss to Ohio State.

Up Next: A Southern Utah team that gave up 204 yards on the ground and another 350 in the air during a surprising home upset to North Alabama.
