Meet 6 College Football Teams Changing Conferences in 2018

Meet 6 College Football Teams Changing Conferences in 2018

In the past decade or so, college football squads bounced to new conferences like their very lives depended on it. The moves were always about money. How else does one explain Maryland and Rutgers finding their way into the Big Ten? The next few years will be no different, albeit less dramatic and chaotic as before, as six college football teams changing conferences between now and 2021 prepare to move into their new homes.

The 2018 conference shuffle gives us something we've literally never seen before: An FBS squad moving down to the FCS.

Despite improving drastically on the field, including a 9-4 mark and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win in 2016, the Idaho Vandals decided to drop down to the Big Sky after the Sun Belt gave them the boot at the end of the 2017 season. While it's a shame the school has to leave the FBS as it was building nice momentum, the move actually makes a lot of sense.

Also booted from The Belt was New Mexico State, but unlike Idaho it has decided to remain at the FBS level as an independent. Joining them in 2018 will be Liberty who currently is without a conference affiliation both this season and in the near future.

The biggest move up in 2018 is going down at the D2 level as perennial power North Alabama transitions over the next few years into the Big South of the FCS.
