Chuck Martin isn’t a name many people think of when Power Five coaching opportunities open up. But maybe that changes in the near future.
The Miami (Ohio) head coach has led the RedHawks to a 9-2 overall record thus far in 2023 with a 6-1 mark in MAC play. Martin may have a losing record as a head coach with a 45-59 mark going into this season, but the RedHawks haven’t suffered a losing regular season since 2017 and have made a bowl game each of the last three years (not including 2020 when they were 2-1 overall).
If Miami (Ohio) continues to win like this, maybe Power Five programs begin to consider Martin. Here’s a look at some programs he could end up at.

Iowa State
Matt Campbell was once a popular candidate to become a head coach at a bigger school or even for an NFL team. He may want to move on soon, especially since the Cyclones’ win percentage has gone down every year since 2020. Iowa State is also 2-3 in bowl games since he became the head coach in 2016 and is 6-5 this season.
If the Cyclones are in need of a new head coach going into the 2024 season, some high-profile coaches would probably be interested. Martin should be a name to consider.
Duke
Some have speculated that Duke head coach Mike Elko would be high on the list to replace Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M. If that did happen, Martin would be a great candidate to take over at Duke.
Elko has only been the Blue Devils’ head coach for two years, but they went 9-4 last year after a victory in the Military Bowl and are 6-5 in 2023. The football program is in a good spot, which might make the job appealing for a coach like Martin.
Boston College
Jeff Hafley’s win percentage has gotten worse every year he’s been at Boston College. The Eagles went 3-9 last year, though they are 6-5 this season despite a loss to Northern Illinois.
If Boston College decides to go in a different direction, Martin would be a good fit.

Virginia Tech
Brent Pry is in just his second year at Virginia Tech. But the Hokies are 5-6 this year, including a loss to Marshall, after going 3-8 last year.
If Virginia Tech needs a new head coach, Martin wouldn’t be a bad candidate. He has coaching experience on both sides of the ball and could help the Hokies, who have been outside of the top 50 in the country in terms of scoring offense and scoring defense.
Michigan State
Michigan State announced it fired head coach Mel Tucker for cause. The Spartans could go any number of directions with this hire, including internally.
Martin is worthy of consideration for MSU, especially since he knows that region of the country well.
