37: Tyrese Wright, DB (Sr.) — Monmouth
Wright is wearing No. 2 this season
Monmouth prides itself on its fast, physical, and disciplined defense. The Hawks have had and currently have several standout defensive backs, one being the hard-hitting Tyrese Wright from his safety spot.
Wright has been making plays on the backend of Monmouth’s defense since his true freshman season in 2019, starting five games. He then started all four games in the shortened spring season, finishing with 24 tackles.
The 6-foot, 215-pounder had a fabulous year last fall. He led the team with 71 tackles and 10 passes defended. Wright also had 2.5 tackles for loss and one interception, earning a spot on the All-Big South Second Team.
The Hawks have established a winning culture. They went 9-3 in 2017, 8-3 in 2018, 11-3 in 2019, 3-1 in the spring, and 7-4 last season. Monmouth now heads to the deeper Colonial Athletic Association. In the CAA title picture without former FCS power James Madison, the race for playoff spots looks packed with several quality teams on par with each other. An experienced Monmouth squad should be a factor in that race.
“Right now, it’s a full head of steam,” Wright said. “I want everyone on the same page this summer. We have to work. We’re going into one of the best FCS conferences in the country and we gotta work.”
