FCS PLAYOFFS: Wofford Beats Furman Again, Advances to Quarterfinals

The 2017 FCS Playoffs are here and we've got game-by-game wrap ups.

THE STANDOUTS

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Goodson, QB, Wofford – The deft option quarterback was big in the game, throwing for 88 yards and a touchdown, needing only 11 throws — and rushing for another 34 yards on just four carries to help break things open for the Terriers.

THE TURNING POINT

Late in the first half, Wofford found itself down 14-10 and in a third down and four situation, but Brandon Goodson found Blake Morgan for a 33-yard touchdown with just 45 seconds left in the half to put the Terriers up for good. The Terriers drove 64 yards in just 45 seconds to go ahead on this drive, with Goodson hitting on 3-for-4 passing for 58 yards, with the first two completions going to R.J. Taylor.

THE SKINNY

This looked like it would be quite the barn burner of a rematch for Wofford, but the Terriers responded well. Down 10-7 late in the second quarter, the Terriers — led by Goodson above — pulled off theatrics in a 45-second blast where the usual run-happy Terriers actually took to the air. Then the defense clamped down on Furman in the second half and closed the book. The truth is, Wofford looked pretty darned good in its 2016 FCS playoff run too, and it begs the question if we'll see something like that this year — but of course that would necessitate a trip up to Fargo. Which brings us to our next point.

PREVIEW OF NEXT WEEK

Only the SEC's South Carolina has topped 28 points against Wofford this year, and North Dakota State's offense is the type that can hang a bunch of points on an opponent. This will all come down to whether the Terriers can control the clock — something the Bison are also good at. Plus, can this Wofford offense move the ball on this brutal NDSU defense in the FargoDome. That's obviously the biggest question. Personally, I see his year's South Carolina team and this year's North Dakota State team as somewhat comparable, if that gives any indication.

THE PREDICTION

North Dakota State 28, Wofford 13
