Welcome to the 2020 FCS Jersey Countdown.
Throughout the May-August months, HERO Sports is going to name the best returning FCS player by jersey number, 99-1. Due to rosters being updated at different times for teams across the country and to keep things consistent, jersey numbers are based on the 2019 season.
The full 99-1 countdown/schedule can be found here.
*Note: Jersey numbers are based on 2019 rosters.
89: Garett Maag, WR (Jr.) — North Dakota
Big things are in store for Maag in 2020, not only because of the progression he’s made in two seasons at UND, but because he’ll now be looked at as the go-to receiver.
The Fighting Hawks lose their top two pass-catchers from last year: Noah Wanzek (74 catches, 996 yards, 4 TDs) and Travis Toivonen (48 catches, 684 yards, 7 TDs). The good news is Maag is more than capable of being that new No. 1 receiver.
Last year, the 6-foot-4 and 215-pounder caught 59 passes for 610 yards and five touchdowns. This came after playing as a true freshman in 2018, where Maag had 266 yards receiving and five touchdowns.
With a big catch radius, Maag will be the best friend of UND’s new starting quarterback.
