San Diego extended its Pioneer Football League winning streak to 25 games Saturday with a dominating 42-13 victory against Butler, a team who defeated ranked Youngstown State earlier in the year.
The last time the Toreros lost a conference game was Oct. 10, 2015 — a 13-12 defeat versus Dayton. Since then, it's been nothing but wins with one guy under center this entire time. Anthony Lawrence is a four-year starter for San Diego and it's no coincidence his steady play and this win streak have gone hand in hand.

Quarterbacks are asked to do a lot of things, and take care of the ball is toward the top of the list. That's exactly what Lawrence has done throughout his career.
His touchdown-to-interception ratio is off the charts at 101 touchdowns to 21 interceptions. And it's not like he's been conservative. In 43 career games, Lawrence has thrown for 10,950 yards for an average of 254.7 yards per game with a completion percentage of 66.
Here's his TD-INT ratio from his redshirt freshman season to this year.
- 2015: 23-6
- 2016: 25-8
- 2017: 33-3
- 2018: 20-4, including 16-0 against PFL opponents.
Lawrence has been the most explosive with his arm this season, averaging 347 passing yards a game that ranks second in the FCS. His best before this year was in 2016 with 249.8 yards per game.
To add to his resume, Lawrence has two playoff wins, which as a non-scholarship team, were considered upsets against Big Sky opponents.
The Toreros have been challenged more this season compared to year's past. They narrowly defeated Dayton 36-34 a couple weeks ago. But the team just keeps winning and is looking for its fifth conference title in a row.
With Lawrence behind center, you can bet he'll put the team in good position to win plenty more games this season.
