27: Tyler Campbell, DB (Sr.) — Elon
Campbell took an interesting path to become a 12-game starter for the Phoenix in 2017. His career began at Army as a running back in 2015 and 2016. The decision was made to move him to defensive back when he transferred to Elon last year. Campbell was a natural out there, winning the team's Most Outstanding Newcomer award as he totaled 63 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Campbell also led the team with three interceptions.
"Some guys are just really wired to make good decisions on the field," Elon head coach Curt Cignetti said last year. "There's a lot of multiples in football and when the ball is snapped there's a lot of things going on, and some guys diagnose things real quickly and are always in position doing what they're coached to do. He has consistently been one of those guys."
Campbell added some spark on special teams as well, averaging 21.5 yards on 32 kick returns, including 99 total yards against Toledo in the season opener. The next game against Furman, he recorded 15 total tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. He was a fixture in the starting lineup since as Elon finished 8-4 with a trip to the playoffs.
